Wine Wednesday | Fattoi Brunello di Montalcino 2006

Italian wines. I can’t say I’m a fountain of knowledge on the subject, having taken my only trip to Italy with my family when I was 17 years old. I supposed I could reference my rough Italian wine education from my brief employment at The Olive Garden, but wait, I was a waitress there when I was 19-20, so I never actually had the opportunity to try the wine myself. Yeah, I guess you could say I’m kind of an expert when it comes Italian wines. Not. However, I’ve tried a lot of Italian varietals used from grapes grown here in California over the years; Oreana Winery makes an excellent Tuscan-style blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, known as “The Tilly”. But in terms of wines straight from Italy, I usually pass that section in the wine store in favor of the California wines, an area I’m more familiar with. So it wasn’t until this past weekend when my parents were visiting from New York, that the subject of Italian wines came up. Over drinks and tapas at Milk and Honey, with my friend Erica and my boyfriend Brian, my dad declared, “I’m not really a fan of Italian wines”. Brian, who had just spent some time in Italy a few months prior, disagreed, insisting that my dad try one of the bottles he had shipped back from Italy. Enter the Fattoi Brunello Di Montalcino, a powerful, rich red Italian wine with notes of dark fruit and exotic spices.

Brian brought this wine to dinner at Trattoria Vittoria the next night, a restaurant I chose because of its simply prepared, delicious Italian fare. Everything I’ve ever ordered at Trattoria Vittoria has been fresh and unassuming, not overdone with massive amounts of garlic and cream sauce, which I suppose I am still a little bit fearful of after working at The Olive Garden for as long as I did. With that said, I had a feeling a meal here would be the perfect complement for tasting a new Italian wine. I have to say, I never fail to have the best time at Trattoria Vittoria, it’s just so cozy and cute inside! With a lively atmosphere and warm hostesses and servers, you can’t help but feel like you’re dining in some “off the beaten path” hidden gem in Italy. This restaurant is quickly becoming one of my favorites in Santa Barbara.

After opening the bottle and having our first taste, my mom announced that she could just drink this wine on its own! It would be easy to do, since after a few sips I kept finding something different about this wine. It’s very complex; you won’t be bored by this bottle, it’s truly not your average Italian wine you find at the shelf at Ralph’s. But, I do think that almost any wine can be enhanced by the right food pairing. We started off with the Speck e Formaggi Misti, which is wood-smoked prosciutto served with imported Italian cheeses. So amazing with this wine! There was something about the saltiness of the prosciutto that really brought out the flavors of the wine, oh I could have it every night! My family is really big into creating “cheese plates” as hors d’ourves with wine before dinner, and if I could ship a bottle of this back from Italy for every family occasion I’d be a happy girl. Moving on, for our entrée I took my friend Erica’s suggestion of the Ravioli di Came con Salsa Aurora, which translates to ravioli stuffed with prime rib meat in a pink cream and tomato sauce. In other words, prime rib ravioli. Ridiculous, in the best way. I’m not a huge red meat-eater, but I’m telling you I would order this dish every day of the week, except for the fact that there are so many other amazing menu items to try.

At the end of the meal, Brian asked my dad if he had changed his mind on Italian wines, although I think it was pretty obvious that he had. The only problem was that there wasn’t enough wine for our leftovers the next day! Who knew that my parents had to fly from New York to California for a truly Italian experience? I highly recommend shipping this bottle from Italy, taking it to Trattoria Vittoria, and ordering the prime rib ravioli. You won’t be disappointed!

Cupcake Wars Recap!

Oh Cupcake Wars. You gave me amazing publicity and glory, and also provided me with an endless supply of nightmares that haunt my dreams three to four times a week. Most times I’m in the Cupcake Wars kitchen, scrambling to frost a 1000 cupcakes in under 2 hours, but sometimes it changes up and I’m in front of the judges, getting ripped apart. Truly, there’s always another creative cupcake nightmare to be had. Usually I wake up happy and relieved, knowing I won Cupcake Wars and it was just a dream, but I’m still wondering when my Cupcake Wars post-traumatic stress disorder will end. Honestly, how do people handle shows like Top Chef, where they are filmed for days and weeks on end, having to compete in challenge after challenge? One exhausting day of filming was enough to scar my life for months!

However, it was truly an amazing experience, sparked first by my unhealthy obsession with The Food Network. I would record every Cupcake Wars episode and be so inspired that I couldn’t fall asleep at night, and at the same time be so insanely jealous of every baker who got such an opportunity, that it made it hard to even watch. So, I did what every obsessed girl does, I stalked Cupcake Wars on Facebook until I saw they were casting! There was a casting email address, so of course I emailed them with photos, a link to my website, and every possible bit of information I thought they might find relatively important. A few days later, checking my email on my phone at Trader Joe’s, I got an email from Cupcake Wars casting! They wanted to see a video of me and my cupcakes in action! What!? The checkout girl must have thought I was insane by the way I rushed out of there. Fifteen minutes later I was on the phone with my best friend and former roommate who lives in San Francisco, asking if she would make a last minute trip to Santa Barbara to help me film this audition tape. If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this crazy Cupcake Wars experience, Erica is a true friend! She drove down two days later, and with the tireless help of Stacey and Oliver and Michele, filming, directing, and editing this video, we came up with a gem. After watching it, I knew I would have to resign myself to being the biggest dork in the world if I made it on the show; apparently when I get on camera I am a complete and utter cornball. Check it out below, if you’re ready for your daily dose of cheese factor.

Ok, so yeah, not going to win any major cool points with my ultra amazing acting skills, but Stacey did an incredible job filming us, and Erica and I had a blast. Video sent in, I waited anxiously for the next few weeks for a response. Amazingly enough, on my 29th birthday, August 22nd, I received a phone call from Cupcake Wars. “I just wanted to let you know you’ve been selected as a contestant on Cupcake Wars” the voice on the other line said. The amount of freaking out on my part was insane, and if you know me, you know I get excited at pretty much the tiniest of things. If I see a kitten, I have a heart attack and die of cuteness. And kittens are pretty commonplace. So, being told I’m on Cupcake Wars was crazy; it was definitely the best birthday present I had ever received. From the time I found out I was selected, to the time Cupcake Wars filmed, Erica and I put ourselves through what I like to call “Cupcake Bootcamp”. It was hardcore, “learn everything we don’t know about cupcakes” intensity. We watched every episode of Cupcake Wars we could get our hands on, read cupcake blogs, tried new decorating ideas, and I bought a book called “The Flavor Bible” which tells you what flavors are most likely to pair well together. I made cupcake flashcards, I memorized recipes, nothing was going to get in my way. My poor friends, they knew the only way they would see me during this time was if they came over to try a new cupcake flavor. Wait, why am I feeling bad for them?

Finally, the day of filming came, and of course, Erica and I found it hard to sleep. I think I got a full one hour of sleep that night. Waking up at 5am the next day, Erica and I rallied ourselves with far too much hotel coffee and a pre-Cupcake Wars dance party. From now on “You Make Me Feel…” by Cobra Starship will forever remind me of that morning. Don’t judge. It’s a great song to get the adrenaline flowing before an all day cupcake competition. Oh and if you haven’t seen our episode, you can watch it below!

Honestly the episode really says it all. It was definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life, but truly the most rewarding as well. On December 11th, the night my episode aired, I hosted a “Cupcake Wars Viewing Party” at Oreana Winery. We poured Sugar Cat Noir and Sugar Cat Blanc, and I made a zillion Sugar Cat cupcakes. It was so amazing to be able to celebrate with my friends, although I have to admit, slightly awkward for me to watch myself on the big screen. Turns out I’m overly animated with my facial expressions; I’m pretty sure any time they wanted a glimpse into what people were thinking, they panned to me raising an eyebrow or smiling ridiculously. But hey, we weren’t playing poker here, we were baking cupcakes! All in all, it was an amazing experience, but I couldn’t have done it without Erica and Stacey, and the support of my friends and family. I owe you all a lifetime of cupcakes!!!

Wine Wednesday | Oreana ? Red Table Wine

The Sunday Sparkle is proud to present Wine Wednesday! Every Wednesday we’ll give you a review of one of our favorite wines, and give you some tips on what to pair it with and why. For our first Wine Wednesday, I thought it was only fitting to choose one of my favorite wines from the winery I pour for on the weekends, Oreana Winery. This unique winery in Santa Barbara’s Funk Zone features live music on the weekends and has a beautiful outdoor patio area. On sunny Saturdays, there’s nothing better than picking up a baguette and some cheese, buying a bottle of wine, and sitting outside with friends to enjoy the sun and music.

The Oreana ? Mark Red Table Wine is Oreana’s best kept secret. You may have seen this bottle before at Trader Joe’s… with the bright orange question mark logo, it’s pretty hard to miss! Oreana doesn’t even pour this wine on the tasting menu, so be sure to ask a server to open a bottle so you can try a taste. I love pouring this wine for people, because it pretty much means our sales will go up for the day. I’ve found most people who try it walk out with a bottle!

First things first, do not even think about judging this wine by the price! At $10 per bottle, this wine could easily sell for double its price. But let’s not mention that to Christian Garvin, Oreana’s charming winemaker, because then it would be harder to buy this wine by the case, which you will surely want to do. In fact, I ship this wine by the case to my parents in Syracuse, New York, and they’ve started to refer to it as their “house wine”.

A 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, this wine started off as a happy mistake as two wines accidentally blended together due to an accident during the winemaking process. What resulted was a smooth blend rich with spice and pepper, perfectly delightful to drink on its own. If you’re looking for the perfect meal to pair this with, I would suggest a rustic sausage and pepper pasta or a smoky pulled pork sandwich. If you can get your hands on some Dinosaur BBQ sauce, you will be in pulled pork heaven, I promise you. Hosting a Super Bowl party this year? Cook up a batch of hearty, spicy chili and pair it with this wine. Perfection.
